The standard
What standard HDR photography gets wrong
Most property photos are shot using automated HDR — the camera stacks multiple exposures and blends them together. The result is well-known: muddy colours, glowing windows, and a processed flatness that strips texture from high-end materials.
The root cause is colour casting. Interior fixtures throw warm orange light. Windows let in cool blue daylight. When automated blending averages the two, the colour story of the space breaks down — white oak floors go greenish, marble reads grey instead of white, painted walls lose their actual tone.
For volume real estate this is often acceptable. For a luxury listing, a builder portfolio, or a renovator's showcase, it is not.
The approach
Manual light control, not automated blending
The technique is called flambient — a combination of flash and ambient light. Each scene requires two separate captures: one at ambient exposure to record the exterior view through windows naturally, and a second with studio flash to light the interior surfaces independently.
Both layers are blended by hand in post-production. Because each light source is isolated and controlled before blending, colour casting is eliminated at the source rather than corrected after. Walls render their actual painted colour. Windows expose cleanly — no glow, no blown-out sky. Materials like white oak, concrete, or custom stonework retain dimensional texture instead of flattening into a single averaged tone.
Every image is then edited individually — no batch presets, no bulk adjustments. Each frame is colour-corrected and graded on its own terms. The result is a photograph that shows the property as it actually looks, not a processed approximation of it.
